FD asked me "Hey dude, can we go for the movie ‘Departed’. I have some medium priority work to finish and hesitated for a while and asked "why not on Friday dude" .He replied that he will be going out for the weekend and wanted to see the movie. "Okay" I replied and then asked who else are joining us. Then we made few phone calls and altogether we were 6 set to go for the movie and reached ad labs multiplex at 9.30, the movie was supposed to start at 9.45. No queue in the theatre, swiped in our ICICI cards. Got silver tickets RS 90 each. Took the escalator. Got into the theater. AC welcomed us and got seated according to the number. In interval got 3 pop-corn rs 40 and 2 coke rs 30 each . Saw the movie and while returning took auto for 60.Reached home and slept in the bed .
14th August 2002... Night 7.30 PM...
"Hey come on hurry up da machi. Get ready for "thalaivar" (RAjini) movie “shouted my roomie who just entered after finishing his evening quota of smoking.”We are all going to watch 'thala' movie one day before everyone else" he reiterated the fact and he showed the BABA symbol. The enthu in his voice caught everyone and we the four roomies and two other friends threw our playing cards and were suddenly moving here and there for collecting our dresses. We all blindly picked up some dress in the pack which was piled in the extreme corner and were getting dressed.
One of my friend looked into the score for the rummy we have played and told "Machi today also Ilango have to pay for the cigarette”. To make the cards game interesting we usually have this custom, the loser has to pay for the others. And it is always either Ilango or Suresh who ends up in paying .
"Hey time is only 7.30 and the movie is at 10.30 only, why should we hurry. After all we have the tickets “Vijay said.
"Hey come on man this is not some x or y hero movie. This is thala movie machi , we have to be there from the start and god knows how big the crowd will be " replied Suresh , the hardcore rajini fan who got these tickets through his influence in Rajini fan club..
All agreed to Suresh and started from perungudi and suddenly we realized that no one has enough money. Having no other choice they looked into me. I have the habit of throwing all the changes into my box and it will be full of coins. So decided to open the box and to our bad luck it was full of 1 and 2 rupees coins only. It counted to around 30 rupees or something and this money will be enough only for tea and snacks and so we decided that while returning back every one has to walk.
We were waiting for the 21H, and even though it was fully loaded, we decided to stick to it. Only four of us managed to get into bus and two were missing. We came to know this only when we reached the destination. When we reached the theatre, all got excited by the banners and the cut-out. "Look at him. How smart he is even at this age" admired Suresh . When we got into theatres, we realized that there was a huge crowd before us and the queue was too big at least some 100 persons in between . Prasad, walked straight into the queue and we could see him mixing well with the queue in particular point. We silently followed him and we all settled there. When the last person got in between, the guy standing behind found out and he began to shout and there was a little hassle but we were 7 and the majority wins. Were there in the queue sweating, pushing, pulling and finally the counter was open at 10. 2 hours we stood in the queue and finally manage to break into the theatre... What a crowd? What an excitement? Entered into the theater and there was cigarette smoke everywhere. We were all coughing, yeah passive smoking is injurious to health and the sweat in the body was not dried by the old fan which was there as a dummy. Imly we got used to the situation and were dancing frantically for the songs. The movie started and there was a hell of excitement and everyone was shouting. I threw the bit of sheets which we took from the home [similar to flowers ;-)] .For nearly half of the movie we were dancing, though the movie was little sub standard for Rajini, we did not felt anything as the whole crowd was cheering and enjoying. Movie got over and while returning we all walked for nearly 7kms and in the night we started the next round of cards…
